Holiday Hygge

The weather outside might be frightful, but your home is so delightful!

Here’s a quick and easy wine bottle craft that conveys the warmth of holiday hygge (“hoo-guh”). Hygge is a Norwegian and Danish term for comfort and coziness…exactly the vibes you want for Christmas.

For home decor with that warm and snuggly look, make yourself some yarn-wrapped wine bottles.

Wine bottles are not hard to come by. If you don’t have some at home, you can usually find them at the thrift store. But you might also try your local recycling center as wine and beer bottles are something people often drop off.

I got lucky. A neighbor had lost interest in his wine-making hobby and had cases of un-used bottles taking up valuable space in his garage.”Would you like to have them?” he asked. “Yes, yes!”, I replied. I’ve been wanting to try all of these cool wine bottle crafts I’d seen on Pinterest and this is one of them!

LIST OF MATERIALS:

For something that’s toned down, minimalist, yet has a simple elegance, you can’t go wrong with yarn-wrapped wine bottles. They make a pretty window display or table centerpiece.

  • Wine Bottles
  • Spray Paint
  • 3M Painter’s tape
  • Gritty sandpaper
  • Yarn
  • Craft Glue (or Elmer’s glue)

Step 1) Prep the wine bottle

Wash the bottle well, especially inside. If it was a used bottle, it may have some residue or even an unpleasant odor.

Sand the neck of the bottle using a piece of gritty sandpaper. Just lightly scuff it up– don’t get too serious. This will prep the surface and help the spray paint to stick better. Then wash the bottle off and dry.

Apply painter’s tape just a bit below the ‘shoulder’ of the bottle. It doesn’t have to be perfect since the yarn will overlap a bit. Then wrap the bottom portion of the bottle below the shoulder by taping a plastic sack around it, or tin foil…whatever you have on hand.

Step 2) Spray Paint the upper part of bottle

What color should you use? That’s up to you, but from an artistic perspective, white looks really sharp. White gives a nice contrast to whatever color of yarn you use. Plus, white is crisp and clean and most of all, wintery!

Start with a light coat. Allow it to sit and dry for a few minutes, then apply a second (2nd) coat. When that dries (1/2 hour), turn the bottle up-side down to spray under the lip of the bottle.

*NOTE: Let the spray paint dry thoroughly overnight before adding the yarn.

Step 3) Add Yarn

This final step goes really fast. Use any yarn of any color you wish.

Decorating Tip: if you plan to use more than one bottle in a grouping, it looks best if they are wrapped in the same color yarn. The uniformity gives it polish.

Wine bottles of slightly different shapes and sizes look nice together as well.

How to wrap the yarn in minutes:

WHAT GLUE? Any basic craft glue will work…use what you have on hand. Aleene’s Tacky Glue is helpful, but Elmer’s or any regular household glue works just fine.

Starting at the base, glue a single strand of yarn around the bottom of bottle. Pat it down gently and allow it to dry a few minutes.

Next, wrap 4-5 rows of yarn around the bottle and gently push them down against the base strand so they fit snugly together. Keep a light tension on the yarn, but you don’t have to pull tight.

See? You don’t even have to glue all of it. Just at the BOTTOM and TOP! Much less messy that way.

The fast way to wrap the string is to clasp the neck of the bottle and twirl the yarn around it.

Watch as you go to make sure the yarn doesn’t overlap or get twisted. If a few strands get out of order, just unwind a bit, re-align the yard and push the strands gently back into place. It’s really easy.

Continue winding until you reach the shoulder of the wine bottle where the paint starts. Overlap the paint with a few strands and GLUE the top strand to the bottle.

Decorating tip: Give it a touch of sparkle by spraying with a glitter spray. Top off with a bow.

Wrapping it up

I hope you’ll enjoy doing this simple craft. Isn’t this a great way to recycle wine and beer bottles? Knit them a “sweater” and bring some Scandanavian hygge (warm fuzzies) into your home this holiday season.

As for me, I’m so glad I met up with the neighbor giving away his bottles. I now have plenty on hand to experiment with when trying all those cool bottle crafts.

While we’re on the subject of contentment, you may be interested in a little inspirational piece I wrote for a fellow blogger on her site “Healing Home”. It’s simply titled “The Rich Reward of Contentment”. It’s kind of an annual thing that resonates with readers who want to find some meaning in the season to balance out the commercialization of Christmas. In it, I also share a little behind-the-scenes peek into my rural lifestyle.

May your Christmas be one filled with peace and all good things.  ~ Kristen
