ATTRACTIVE GARDEN TRENDS FOR THE SMALL BUDGET

So, you’ve been wanting to do something with the backyard. Perhaps it used to be the domain of kids and dogs and swing sets. Maybe you’ve been preoccupied with a recent move and now have time to give attention to your outdoor spaces.

Either way, you’ve been looking at all the lovely pictures on Pinterest or HGTV to see what inspires you and what might work in your yard. Images of immaculately landscaped, weed free exteriors. Not a leaf out of place.  Not a dandelion in sight.

You’ve loved that pretty garden shed. The one that looks so charming with its English cottage look and chapel windows.  Maybe it’s a pond that brings a more natural setting to the landscape. What about a dry stream gravel bed that calls to mind a little brook winding its way across the lawn? Don’t you wish that was your backyard?  I sure wish I could do something like that!

The good news is that you can do ‘something like that! Even on smaller scale, it’s absolutely possible to make your yard a pleasant place where you’ll enjoy spending time. And, it just so happens that many of the current garden trends are perfect for the small budget. They also happen to be trends I love, and I hope you will, too!

Garden trends, small budget

Low Maintenance Landscapes

The natural look is IN! One of the fastest growing trends involves converting the lawn–or at least part of it–into a meadow. Who doesn’t appreciate a low maintenance (or lower maintenance) backyard? Less to mow…less money spent on buying heavy bags of lawn fertilizer and weed chemicals.

Landscapes are beginning to incorporate rocks or boulders with wood ferns and other vegetation to create a more natural and woodsy character to back yards. It’s not only a pleasant setting for people, but one that attracts birds, bees and butterflies.

Do you live in a hot climate? ‘Xeriscape’ is a term for landscapes that are less water dependent. There are many beautiful, unique drought resistant alternatives for water conservation districts. That’s encouraging if you’re in a dryer climate with less annual rainfall. Or perhaps you just live in an area without good wells. The upside is that there’s less fussing with hose and sprinkler systems. Save money, save water, save time. And still have a great looking yard!

Attractive backyard features

Pergola

Pergolas create an inviting gathering place; one with a touch of style and class. From a design perspective, a pergola gives height and interest to an otherwise flat, bland landscape. In hot climates they are often draped with a cloth to offer cool, refreshing shade. Some people like to allow it to serve as a trellis for ivy, wisteria or other climbing vines such as clematis or kiwis.

Then, in the fall, after flower baskets are taken down, string your pergola with mini lights or hanging lanterns to create a warm and welcoming place for holiday entertaining.

Make an interesting walkway

Small budget projects do not have to be bland! Use your imagination and make an artsy impression that looks extravagant, but isn’t. If you’ve ever thought about adding a small patio or pathway across the yard or garden, make it interesting!

Sometime referred to as “crazy paving”, it’s a mix and match of concrete pavers, stone and gravel or even treated lumber. Combining different styles and textures mimics mosaic.

Use remnants. You can start gathering your blocks by visiting building material “Re-Stores” (scroll down for more on this). Or by keeping an eye out on your local Facebook Buy-Sell-Trade sites. There’s always someone with a pile of remnant material in the backyard offered ‘free’ if you’ll come pick it up.

Water features for the small budget

Stock tank ponds

Stock tank ponds are another way to incorporate a bit of nature into the landscape. While in-the-ground ponds are lovely, maintenance can be a real chore. On a smaller scale, stock tanks are easier to care for. With a small pump added, you’ll have that relaxing gurgle of running water that can transform a small backyard space.

Fountains

Fountains are another low-cost feature that changes your backyard environment. They are absolutely ideal for the small garden or patio. With so many styles of fountains to choose from, you’re sure to find one that fits your decor. And the birds will love it! No doubt about it, ponds and fountains are a wonderful garden trend for a small budget.

Tips on selecting a fountain: Listen carefully to the sound the fountain makes. For some people, a ‘barely there’ high-pitched trickling of water can be annoying. Like the drip of a leaky faucet. On the other hand, a gushing of water may sound like you’re filling the bathtub. So choose the one that sounds the most refreshing to your ear.

Antique, salvage and thrift store decor

The enduring “shabby” trend never goes out of style. And it’s no wonder! As garden decor, the ‘look’ is comfortably funky, and full of charm and whimsy. Plus, these quaint accent items are super easy on the budget.

What appeals to you? You’ll find it at garage sales or thrift stores. I certainly enjoy the fun of seeing what I can come up with for my own garden. (psst…those are my hub cap flowers in the photo below!) Old furniture can be painted up in bright, cheerful colors. You can also re-purpose just about anything to create the cutest little vignette on the front porch.

Anyone can see why the rustic/vintage garden style has such staying power!

Where to get materials

Ideas for the small budget

When it comes to designing your garden, free or low-cost materials have never been more readily available then they are today.   Consider the following:

Need mulch for weed control or wooded pathway?

  • Tree management companies often allow folks to come collect free wood chips. They’ve got piles they’ve hauled from their customer’s job sites and don’t have room to store it. They’ll fill your pick up, or if you want to keep the bed clean, use garbage cans or heavy-duty plastic bags.

Want to build a greenhouse or cold frame?

  • Old windows are frequently available free or very low cost on Craig’s List or Facebook Marketplace (buy/sell/trade). They’re perfect for a greenhouse or garden shed.

Looking for brick pavers to build a patio? Fencing material? Outdoor lighting?

Shop your local re-store!

A “re-store” is like a thrift shop for used home improvement items; building materials, lumber, tools, tubs and sinks, you name it. Leftover paint, sealant, or concrete mix are often available, too, saving you lots!

If you have a general idea of what you’d like to do with your yard or garden, a lot of the materials may just be easy to come by at a fraction of the cost! With fees going up at the landfill, contractors are much more inclined to try to salvage as much of their remnant building materials as possible.

While they may go by different names, many of those places are run by Habitat for Humanity. According to the information I found on the Internet, there are over 900 Habitat for Humanity Re-Stores across the U.S. You just may have one close to you!
