How to Make a Basket for Elegant Holiday Porch

Elegant Holiday Porch decor. Photo of hanging basket stuffed with artificial Christmas greenery, pine branches, ferns, pine cones and snowflake

Convey the splendor of the Christmas season with an elegant holiday porch. One that’s as warm and inviting as the atmosphere inside. Therefore, you’ll love this not-so-common porch decoration that is certain to get raves from family and friends. It looks so fancy, yet you won’t believe how incredible simple and inexpensive it is to make.

This year, I was tired of the same-o, same-o holiday decorations and wanted to do something different. Something unique. Did I go out and buy all new stuff. No way! We all have more Christmas stuff than we care to admit. It was just a matter of looking at what I already had on hand and using it in a different way. I wanted an elegant holiday porch, not something tacky.

A hanging basket arrangement that truly inspires the beauty and hope of Christmas.

“I am the Light of the World. He who follows Me will not walk in darkness but have the light of life” John 8:12

Description

Cascading mini lights create a absolutely stunning attraction on the front porch. What’s more, you can do this outdoor display in the comfort of your own home. Most Christmas decorations have to be put up out in the cold. Not this one!

You can create this beautiful arrangement on the kitchen table where it’s nice and toasty warm. Gather all your materials together and “plant” them as you might plant your basket flowers in Spring. It’s that easy!

Then, hang it up under the porch and plug it in. You may need to make some slight adjustments after you’ve positioned it. Otherwise, its the type of Christmas decoration that’s totally doable for someone who lives alone.

So go pull a hanging basket or two out of the garage or garden shed. Leave the dirt in it as the decor is just going right over the top. You can pull thing together in under an hour.

Materials- elegant holiday porch display

  • one string of mini lights (for outdoor use)
  • Christmas garland (traditional green or white/silver, your preference)
  • Christmas balls (plastic recommended)
  • Pine cones
  • Snowflakes, any size, plastic or wooden
  • floral pics (these are short, decorative pics that are used as accents in real or artificial flower arrangements or wreaths) Look for holiday themed ones
  • Artificial accents: poinsettias, holly, sprigs of pomegranates, cranberries etc.

TIP: If you find you need a few extra things to make your hanging basket, look no further than your local thrift store. They’ll have everything you’ll need, in good shape at bargain prices. Lights, greenery, ornaments, pine cones, you name it!

STEP 1 Add lights. Make long loops feeding the lights across the top of the basket. (plug should be at the bottom for ease of plugging in)

STEP 2 Add greenery. I wrapped a wired garland around the basket and fluffed it out. You’ll notice also, that I used a plastic fern from another arrangement. Ferns, ivies, and other such greens blend in beautifully. In addition, they provide some variety and give the arrangement some lift on top.

STEP 3 Add snowflakes, ornaments etc. just like you were decorating a tree

For an Elegant Holiday Porch, make a hanging basket lush with Christmas greenery. Photo shows close up of basket with artificial pine branches, fern, pine cones, holly and snowflake

TIP: You may wish to fasten hangers a bit more tightly than you would on a tree for breezy weather.

It you need to use an extension cord, make sure it’s not a tripping hazard.

Wrapping it up

For an elegant front porch presentation this season, I hope you’ll try this easy craft. Not only because you’ll have fun creating something that’s a little different. But also because of the beauty and splendor it brings to the front door. Like the song says: “for the holidays you can’t beat home sweet home”.
