Decorate your garden: Deciding on a theme

If you want to decorate your garden to convey a certain “look” or “feel”, start with a theme. Decorating a garden is not much different than decorating your home. Popular home decor styles like Farmhouse, Shabby Chic or French-Country, transfer over to the garden quite nicely. Practically anything that is used for indoor decor can be used outdoors.

But you don’t have to decorate your garden to match the house. Not at all! That’s where the fun begins. Many people play up the mystery and magic of gardens by incorporating fairies, gnomes, and other imaginative things that make backyard spaces rather interesting escapes.

Helpful TIP: As you look at pictures on Pinterest or in magazines, think about the elements that capture your attention. Ask yourself what it is about that setting that appeals to you. Do you like its light-heartedness? The simplicity? Maybe you like the formal “elegance” it conveys. Notice the type of artistic accents used in the photo. Once you have a vision of what you’d like to do, then you can start the project with confidence.

Where do I start?

Think about your outdoor spaces; the size and configuration of your yard. Without doing a major landscaping overhaul, which part of the yard seems like the most obvious and natural place to start your decorative theme? What features does it already have? Flower beds, a pretty tree, some shrubs, a fence, etc.

For me, it was the addition of a small garden shed. Once the shed was up and painted, I began to work outwards in a semi-circle from the shed. A simple pathway leading to the shed, garden beds and shrubs planted around it, a patch of lawn. Little by little. This year, I hope to add a vignette or two using a wheelbarrow and my garden scarecrow, lady Emily. But you get the picture!

Where to get unique decor for your garden?

In my opinion, the big box store offer somewhat ordinary fare. But you may still find something you like that fits in with your theme.

Instead, try garage sales and thrift stores which can be great places to find unique things for a low price. When you know your decor theme, it’s easier to know what to look for. Remember that almost anything can be painted or spray-painted. Although sometimes a weathered look is more desirable. That’s up to you!
